Your hosts, Farnum & Ednah How

Farnum knows the timber, the frame and the grounds. Ednah knows the families, the rooms and the long history of the dwelling. Ask them anything.

321 High Street in an earlier era, with black shutters

A Georgian house of about 1775, remodeled around 1869, 321 High Street was raised when this end of High Street still belonged to the town of Newbury.

The land was part of the Atkinson family's holdings, a family that settled Newbury in the 1630s. In 1793 John Atkinson, a hatter, sold it to Farnum How, a Newbury blacksmith. Through the 1800s the house was two households, and on this side came a chaise and carriage builder, then the Morse family until 1914.

The twentieth century brought the Fowlers, the Foleys and the Gallants, who kept the house from 1956 to 1998. Its paired front doorways, with their arched moldings, come from the Victorian remodeling.
